A Qualitative Exploration of The Mesa Initiative User Experience in Renfrew County Cayden Peixoto, MSc; Kaylie Kuehl, MSc; Matt Cruchet, MSc; Mathieu Grenier, MA; Kate Monahan, MSc; Jonathan Fitzsimon, MD Abstract Background The Mesa initiative in Renfrew County is a community-based, rapid response team that provides wraparound support services (healthcare, social and housing) to homeless and unhoused community members. Through a collaborative approach between the County of Renfrew’s Departments of Emergency Services, Community Services, and Property and Development, Mesa helps residents and visitors to Renfrew County have access to the full range of quality healthcare, housing and social services that they need, when and where they need them, without financial, social or cultural barriers. Objective This study sought to explore the experiences and perceptions of Mesa patients and identify the benefits and limitations of the Mesa initiative within Renfrew County. Methods This study used a qualitative design to explore the experiences and perceptions of homeless and unhoused community members in Renfrew County who are Mesa patients. Participants were recruited via direct and snowball sampling at a local outreach hub called the Grind, located in the municipality of Pembroke, Ontario. Both semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted for data collection, and data were analyzed thematically. Results Data were collected from n=14 participants across 6 interviews. Most participants were men (78.6%), aged 45 or older (57.1%), had experienced homelessness or unstable housing for over 1 year at the time of interview (64.3%). Overall, Mesa patients have reported a positive effect, both personal and for the community, resulting from the Mesa team’s presence and support. The findings are presented in four main themes: 1) Experience of Being Homeless in Renfrew County; 2) Impact of Mesa; 3) Mesa-Community Relationship; and 4) Improving Mesa. Conclusion Consistent evaluation over time is key to ensure that Mesa patients are satisfied and are receiving the care and support they need, when and where they need it. The study results will be critical for quality improvement and future development of the Mesa team program as it continues to expand. |
